We Live to Eat…We Certainly Do

Category: Uncategorized

What does it mean to live to eat?  I am sure if you asked a thousand people across the United States, you would get a thousand different answers.  However, if you asked a thousand New Orleanians, the resounding response would be, “A way of life.”  Our restaurants and recipes are sacred children of this city.  It’s what we know and what we protect.  Just look around you, every corner restaurant has a history.  Each of those buildings has a story, and each story has touched a thousand lives to become the glue that binds us to this great city.

In 2009, the We Live to Eat initiative was created as a concentrated effort by the New Orleans Chapter of the Louisiana Restaurant Association to galvanize the local food-loving community.  This industry is, without question, the envy of the country and the world.  Our city’s restaurants have challenged themselves with the goal of making sure that the citizens of New Orleans know that they are not only the protectors of these gems, but also the energy that allows these great establishments to continually succeed and give back.  As we all know, this is the truest of all partnerships. Our success as an industry depends on our guests, and our economy depends on our restaurants.  Throughout this year, and the coming ones, this initiative will feature creative events, unique dining menus, discussions, festivals, and campaigns to assist in the development of our city’s restaurants as a leading brand in New Orleans.

Travel outside this great city and you will quickly realize something is missing.  Possibly it is your favorite waiter or that perfect cup of turtle soup.  Maybe you find yourself thinking about that great meal in the French Quarter with friends a few years ago, or the boiled seafood and local draft beer in Bucktown last week.  Either way, the first thing most of us miss is that fuel for our soul provided by what is undoubtedly a cherished industry in this city, our restaurants.

This movement must be “owned” by our local community and as a result initially driven by a grassroots campaign.  The largest driver for restaurant recommendations, decisions and invitations is word of mouth and we will are actively igniting and continuing the conversations that motivate the food-loving community here to do the same.   Eating is a big part of the way we live life here, and through a concentrated effort we will ultimately succeed in assisting our restaurants in their quest to make New Orleans that shining city on a hill.
